In this edition of the Truth Tuesday newsletter, I bring you the most thought-provoking insights from the month of May, including the discussions with Noam Chomsky, Mayor Jaylen Smith, and John Vervaeke.
So, let’s get right into it:
Mayor Jaylen Smith: Leading with Heart and Wisdom
At eighteen years old, Mayor Smith is among the youngest individuals ever to win an election in the United States. The New York Times described Smith as a “young, energetic, and ambitious” leader who is determined to improve the fortunes of Earle, a small town in Arkansas that has been struggling economically for years.
Seeing someone younger than me lead a city is truly inspiring and made me think about how we have always thought we need to be a certain age to make an impact in the world. But Mayor Smith exemplifies civic engagement and proves that it’s the size of the heart that matters — not the age, job titles, or reputation. It’s the willingness to step up and be a leader for change that ultimately creates change.

John Vervaeke: Exploring the Meaning Crisis & The Rise of Artificial Intelligence
Professor Vervaeke’s ideas on the meaning crisis we face in modern life are truly eye-opening. His metaphor of “Zombies” representing our lack of meaning and disconnection from ourselves and our communities resonates deeply. As we navigate a world driven by technology and AI, it’s crucial to reflect on whether our technologies are bringing us closer or further apart. Professor Vervaeke’s insights on AI’s potential impact and challenges provide us with valuable perspectives to consider.
AI does have the potential to disenfranchise millions of people and challenge our own conceptions of meaning, which often derive from our work — and that can radically change with AI or even cease to exist. It also has the potential to be used as a darker tool — which we cover in the conversation.

Noam Chomsky: Insights on the State of the World
Noam Chomsky, a renowned scholar and activist, never fails to challenge our assumptions. His discussions on the upcoming US presidential elections, the state of American politics, the Fentanyl Crisis, the Ukraine-Russia war, and the rise of AI shed light on pressing issues that shape our world. Personally speaking, it is quite impressive and admirable that Professor Chomsky continues to be so engaged in all of these nuanced topics and has already caught up with the rise of AI.
Quick takeaways from my conversation with Professor Chomsky:
- The U.S. and China are on a path towards escalating tensions and potential conflict, which would have catastrophic consequences for the world.
- U.S. policy in Ukraine remains stable: the war must continue to weaken Russia severely.
- The world sees this as a proxy war between Russia and the United States fought over Ukrainian bodies, and it’s becoming harder to avoid that conclusion.
- American democracy is at risk, and the 2024 presidential election will be a crucial moment for its future.
